Caterham were the only team to use more than two drivers in 2014, but just who of the four did best?
It’s generally a little harder to compare backmarkers without going into detail as there are no podiums or even points to use as a guide, the only real way is straight head to head results, so that is exactly what I will do.
Position | Driver | Race Finish | Started Ahead | Qualified Ahead | Faster Race Lap |
19 | Marcus Ericsson | 2 | 5 | 4 | 7 |
22 | Kamui Kobayashi | 5 | 10 | 11 | 6 |
23 | Will Stevens | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
24 | Andre Lotterer | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 |
Andre Lotterer is of course dead last in the championship as he hadn’t finished the one race he entered. Marcus Ericsson is highest in the championship, but Kamui Kobayashi started and finished ahead of teammates more than any of the other Caterham drivers. Going only by fastest laps, very even between Ericsson and Kobayashi.
Driver | Out of Q1 | Out of Q2 | Into Q3 |
Marcus Ericsson | 16 | 0 | 0 |
Kamui Kobayashi | 15 | 1 | 0 |
Will Stevens | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Andre Lotterer | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Q1/2/3 isn’t all that exciting for Caterham, just one Q2 all season at that was at the very first race of the season, helped a lot by the poor performance of the two Lotus cars.
Driver | Best Four Finishes | Average Finish | |||
Marcus Ericsson | 11 | 14 | 15 | 17 | 17.1 |
Kamui Kobayashi | 13 | 13 | 15 | 15 | 15.8 |
Will Stevens | 17 | – | – | – | 17.0 |
Andre Lotterer | – | – | – | – | – |
Top finishes for Ericsson and Kobayashi were both at Monaco but Kobayashi has a much better average finish and from looking at all the stats above, Kobayashi was the best Caterham driver last season.
I’ll be doing one of these for every team in reverse championship order, Sauber up next.
