Best race of the season so far by some way! Further proof of why the United States GP at COTA is very close to becoming my favourite race.
The entire weekend was a little bit crazy, FP2 was cancelled completely, FP3 was closed to the public and qualifying didn’t happen until Sunday morning, and even then only two session instead of three. There may not have been any on track action on the Saturday afternoon but it was still one of the most entertaining sessions I’ve seen as the drivers and engineers made their own entertainment.
Nico Rosberg started the race from pole and after six changes for the lead over the race Lewis Hamilton won it with Rosberg second. Sebastian Vettel had a ten place penalty due to an engine change, started in 13th but managed to fight through the field and finish on the podium. With Rosberg second and Vettel third that meant Hamilton won the title, making him the tenth triple champion in F1 history.
The young Toro Rosso duo impressed again, Sainz started last after a crash in qualifying but recovered to seventh, helped by the eight retirements at the United States GP but still impressive, especially as he was in tenth by lap two. Max Verstappen drove well too, briefly running in third but finishing the race in fourth. Alexander Rossi finished his home GP in last place, but due to all the retirements that was 12th, equalling the best finish in the Manor this season.
Just a few changes again, fourth place for Verstappen moved him up two places in the championship to tenth, Jenson Button also moved up two places to 16th and Rossi one place to 20th, switching with his Manor teammate Will Stevens.
Hamilton has won the title, but second and third between Vettel and Rosberg is incredibly close, just four points between them. The midfield is as always very tight, one good result and you can gain one or two positions, a retirement and you can lose one.
